Remember that AKC registration instructions say to choose the color that MOST  CLOSELY  RESEMBLES  YOUR  DOG!!!

If you should have an unusual color of Cocker, it's vital that you choose the correct color.  Please check the alternative colors at the bottom of this page for colors that are not "recognized" by The American Spaniel Club, but which it might be possible to see in this breed.

The following colors and codes are considered "inappropriate" for the American Cocker Spaniel, but may be more accurate descriptions of your Cocker's color.  Many of these colors are known to exist in this breed.   If you have a  puppy that you believe is an "alternate" color, please make every effort to register the dog with the correct color code.  AKC may ask that pictures of the dog be submitted to verify an unusual/alternate color.

If you have a merle Cocker Spaniel and AKC is not willing to accept the color and code that you feel most closely describes your dog, please do not settle for registering the dog as a roan.  It may be advisable to try registering your merle with just the MERLE 131 code.   AKC may be more likely to allow this code to be used without the color
