"CBC" - Complete Blood
Count.
A CBC is a count of the
number and types of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets in a given amount of
blood. CBC is actually a label for a number of tests,
rather than a single test. (See table below for compiled
list of "normal" CBC counts.)
 |
PCV
- “Packed cell volume”
or hematocrit.
Measures the percentage
of red blood cells present in the sample, relative to the total volume of blood. A normal PCV range is
40%-59%. |
 |
Red count - Red blood cell count.
An actual count of the number of red blood cells in a blood
sample. Can vary by laboratory, but an average count
is 5.6-8.7 x 106 per microliter (1
millionth of a liter). |
 |
Hemoglobin
- molecule in red blood cells which carries oxygen.
Normal hemoglobin level is 14-20 grams/decaliter. |
 |
WBC - White
blood cell (Leukocyte) count. Total count of the various
leukocytes. Normal count is 6,000-17,000 per microliter.
- Neutrophils
- These cells engulf disease-causing bacteria and other small
particles.
- Segs -
Mature neutrophils. Normal range 3,000-12,000/microliter.
- Bands -
Immature neutrophils. Normal range 100-300/microliter.
- Eosinophils
- Cells eat up or engulf foreign particles. Normal range is
100-1200/microliter.
- Basophils -
Unknown function. May not be present in every sample.
- Lymphocytes
- Cells destroy or help to destroy invading organisms,
foreign material or viruses. Normal range is
500-4,800/microliter.
- Monocytes -
Can eat or engulf foreign material but can also help in the clean
up of inflamed or irritated tissue. Normal range is
100-1800/microliter.
|
 |
Platelets
- In combination with a protein called fibrinogen, platelets
are responsible for the repair of damaged blood vessels
(formation of clots). Normal count is 145-440/microliter. |
 |
Cell Morphology
- Description of the shape and size of the various cells . |
 |
Reticulocyte
(Immature red blood cell) count - Indicates
whether the body is able to produce new red blood cells
and shows if the body is compensating for anemia.
|
|
|
-
Absolute reticulocyte count
- Takes the severity of the
anemia into account.
